New Job with Movember Funded Men’s Depression and Suicide Network
I’ve started a new position working as project coordinator to develop a new men’s depression website!
Been a busy week settling into my new job. So far everything looks great and I’m really looking forward to working with my new team on this project.
Men’s Depression and Suicide Network
My project is one of five within the Men’s Depression and Suicide Network (MD&SNet) funded by Movember Canada. Other projects focus on First Nations men, older men, veterans, and a photography based awareness project.
Depression in Men
I’ve already learned some interesting facts regarding the under-diagnosis of men’s depression. Depression in men can manifest itself in symptoms that are not always associated with depression.
For example, instead of primarily feeling sadness, men may feel:
- a numbing of emotions,
- and anger
that may be caused by an underlying depression.
Men’s depression is compounded by masculine ideals of strength and the stigma associated with mental illness which prevents many from seeking help.
This resonates with my own experiences, particularly back in the summer of 2009 before I began to develop more severe symptoms of depression. At the time, I didn’t understand what was happening and was afraid of admitting something was going on. I didn’t want to be seen as weak because I couldn’t figure out how to get better on my own. I hid my symptoms and missed all the warning signs as I developed depression.
If you want to learn more the American National Institute of Mental Health has some great info about men’s depression.
I’m looking forward to this new adventure in my life. I hope to use my experiences to make a difference in reducing stigma around men’s depression. This project should help me to continue reaching out to others.
Speaking out, seeking help for an illness, trying to work towards being the healthiest version of yourself are not reasons to be associated with weakness.
In case you’re wondering, MHPOV is still going strong! (I’m working on a new post for next week).
